Sweet Glorious Nothing

4 December, 2023 By Krys Leave a Comment

It has been some time between posts on this particular labour of love.

What has struck me during this hiatus has been the guilt that comes with it. One of my biggest struggles in life is wanting to do all the things, and wanting to do them right now.

I’ve come to realise (after berating myself for a long time) that most of the projects and plans in our lives have ebbs and flows. It’s OK to start, stop, and reset when we want to.

‘Rest is not idleness. To lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.’ – John Lubbock

These sun-loving fragrant little plants from our garden are keeping us busy. We have flat-leaf parsley, chillies, lettuce, oregano, thyme and basil on the go. I love being able to walk outside and pick a few fresh leaves or a chilli or two for use in our cooking.

We’ve been harvesting basil by the truckload for pesto and salads, the parsley is getting chopped near-nightly and thyme is flowering away happily and goes in almost everything we make.

Like most herbs, oregano is a sun-loving plant but tends to be an avid spreader. It now covers large swaths of the front garden. We have plans to pluck and dry the oregano soon.

The deep purple lettuce heads are thriving well. When the plants are ready to harvest, we plan on using them up quickly in a lovely salad.

More progress reports to come, eventually. For now, I’m enjoying the stops as much as the starts.

“The world has enough beautiful mountains, spectacular skies and serene lakes. It has enough lush forests, flowered fields and sandy beaches. It has plenty of stars and the promise of a new sunrise and sunset every day. What the world needs more of, is people to appreciate and enjoy it.” – Michael Josephson
